Wider Work Ministry


At East Plains United Church, we have a strong commitment to Mission Outreach. Our congregation directs 13.5% of envelope givings to Wider Work. We support for example the United Church Mission and Service Fund, Partnership West Food Bank, Wesley Centreand we have a long history of supporting refugee families.Social Justice and Environmental issues are important to us so our Wider Work Ministry regularly offers items of interest, many with linked PDFs.

 

The Pat Wells Memorial Fund. This fund was established by our Wider Work Ministry in honour or our former Staff Associate, Pat Wells. It provides educational assistance to a high school student in Lesotho, southern Africa where Pat once taught high school. Monies are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and economic need. For further information contact Rev. Harold Wells at East Plains. If you wish to make a contribution to the fund please make a cheque out to East Plains United Church and mark it "Pat Wells Memorial Education Fund."

 

The David Richards Memorial Fund. This fund was established by Burke and Anne Richards in memory of Burke's brother David Richards. The purpose of the fund is to provide an educational exposure to the Third World, and/or indigenous people in Canada. Candidats are expected to promote the gospel of Jesus Christ and make a presentation to the congregation of East Plains upon their return. For further information please contact Gail Lorimer, chair of our Wider Work Ministry or Anne Richards at the church. If you wish to make a contribution to this fund, please make a cheque out payable to East Plains United Church and mark it "David Richards Memorial Fund."

Congratulations to Dr. Paul Echlin, a member of East Plains United Church, on being Named to The Globe and Mail's Sports Power of 50 List.
The Sports Section of the February 9th Globe and Mail reported on the research Paul Echlin has been carrying out on sports concussions and his advocacy for safer sports practices. He and his fellow researcher and advocate, Dr. Charles Tator, have been named to The Globe and Mail's Sports Power of 50 List for 2011 for their work in these areas.

In December 2011, Dr. Echlin established an online Sport Concussion Library for athletes, parents, coaches, researchers, educators, medical professionals and the public. Click the link to view the library.
