Our History:
We trace our roots back to 1843 when our Methodist forefathers held "class meetings" in an old building
without a minister. The people met together for the inspiration of study and to express their own religious feelings. Until approximately 1858, these Methodist classes would have been visited every two or three
months by a "saddle-bag preacher"
Our Mission Statement:
As a community in Christ, we celebrate God with us and all creation, and commit ourselves to sharing the work of the Spirit with our families, neighbours and our world.
Mission Outreach:
At East Plains United Church, we have a strong commitment to Mission Outreach. Our congregation directs 13.5% of envelope givings to Wider Work. We support for example the United Church Mission and Service Fund, Partnership West Food Bank, Wesley Centre and we have a long history of supporting refugee families.Social Justice and Environmental issues are important to us so our Wider Work Ministry regularly offers items of interest, many with linked PDFs.
Our Annual Programs include:
Our Annual Arts and Craft Sale: held the first Saturday in November.
Annual Perennial Sale: held the Saturday before Mother's Day in May.
Vacation Bible Sale: held the second to last week in August.
Inclusive Marriage Policy:
East Plains United Church has an inclusive marriage policy which allows marriages to be consecrated between couples regardless of their sexual orientation.
Our cemetery: East Plains UC with its adjoining cemetery is the oldest congregation in the area. The memorial stone for Joseph Lyons in the cemetery reads: 'Joseph Lyons gave this land in 1843 and built the first church on it mostly at his own expense- died April 1872 aged 72 years."For more detail on the cemetery, click here
